Costa Rica hotels come in all shapes and sizes, everything from bare bones eco-lodges, all-inclusive resorts and world class luxury hotels such as the Four Seasons.  Don't misunderstand us: even some eco-lodges are luxurious, making your time in the tropical forest as mosquito free and air conditioned as possible.

There are also a number of great little 'niche' or 'boutique' hotels in many of the most popular destinations.  They offer unique experiences to the traveler, such as the Hotel Parador in Manuel Antonio with it's incredible views of the Pacific, or Capitan Suizo in Tamarindo.  These along with many others can be a great alternative to the larger, more crowded mega-hotels.

Finding these little treasure troves hidden on secluded beaches or on quiet side streets in a suburb of San Jose can be the difference between an average trip or a great time in Costa Rica. We do our best to help you find the little "niche" Costa Rica hotels when we can. Our team has lived here for years and we do name drop from time to time letting you know the little secrets we find out about great little places to stay along the beach or in town so keep you eye open as you browse the site. If you note something in the description such as "Try Costa Rica Staff have stayed here" pay special attention to what we say because you'll be getting our personal experiences from staying at that particular hotel or BnB.

To get you started we'll do a little name dropping here. Here are a few places we have had friends and staff stay where we can say the service was well above average and we can happily recommend to our visitors:

  • The Red Palm Villas - Small but luxurious beach front villas located in Santa Teresa Beach. A number of the young rich and famous have been known to hang out at this relaxing spot. The owner Mike is a cool guy who devotes his private time to taking care of poor indigenous tribes people in Panama. A great place to kick back, recharge and get some healthy food into your body while enjoying some amazing sunsets.
  • Villas de las Aves - Virtually undiscovered little place in Uvita just south of Dominical. Sarah and Paul are the owners of this cozy little place that's a bit hard to find off the road just south of Uvita. Sarah is a highly trained Cordon Bleu chef and cooks the most amazing meals. Paul is the definitely the best waiter in the area and together they make you feel like part of the family (which includes a bunch of rescued, hand fed parrots). Their little place is nestled in a forest where two rivers merge and has air conditioned villas with fully equipped kitchens, outdoor jacuzzis and a pool with deck. This is the place to go if you want to get away from it all and enjoy the sound of rivers, birds and have the most amazing meals you've ever eaten - plus you are only minutes from the ocean and whale watching.
  • The Springs Costa Rica - Still under construction, this resort and spa was built by the same owners who established the amazing La Paz Waterfall Gardens. We had a very nice experience during our stay. If your budget fits this type of place you will not be disappointed with the food and facilities although there are still a few pieces being built of this luxury resort. Magnificent views of the volcano on a clear day.
